We are improving access to TTC personnel for customers who are deaf, hard of hearing or experiencing difficulty with speech. Through use of a telecommunications relay service, customers can directly connect with more TTC departments, in addition to our Customer Service team, by telling a relay service operator the TTC number they wish to call. All major Canadian telecommunications companies provide this service free of charge by dialing 1-800-855-0511 or through text by dialing 711.

What is a telecommunications relay service?

A telecommunication relay service is an operator service that allows people who are deaf, hard of hearing or experiencing difficulty with speech to place calls to standard telephone users via a keyboard, assistive device or smartphone enabled with TTY mode. This system is more efficient as recipients of calls are not required to have a TTY-enabled device to communicate.

What is the function of a relay service operator?

The relay service operator is there to assist with communication between customers using TTY-enabled devices and TTC personnel. Calls placed through a relay service are confidential as relay service operators follow a strict code of ethics and records of conversations are not retained.

What departments can be reached using the relay service?

Customers may reach any department in the TTC that currently takes incoming calls from customers. See our Contact Us section for available departments.

What are the hours of operation?

The relay service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TTC hours of operation will depend on the TTC department customers are trying to reach. Typical office hours are weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., excluding public holidays.

How to use the relay service:

When using the relay service, some communication codes are required during a call:

  • GA: Go Ahead
  • GA, SK: Ready to Hang Up
  • SK, SK: Hang Up Now

To initiate the call:

  1. Dial 1-800-855-0511 using a TTY-enabled device to connect with a relay service operator.
  2. The operator will answer saying “(Telecommunication service) relay service (operator’s name) speaking, GA”.
  3. Tell the operator your name, the phone number with area code and the name of the TTC representative you would like to call, followed by GA.
  4. The operator will dial the number, advise when someone answers and state GA.
  5. Type in your questions/responses followed by GA each time you are finished typing.
  6. The operator will type the responses from the TTC representative who will answer the call as they normally would, addressing any issues raised and end with GA each time.
  7. When you wish the call to end, type GA, SK.
  8. The operator will end the call by typing SK, SK.

Customers also have the option of reaching a relay service operator via text by dialing 711.
