What we are doing and why

City and TTC will be working at the intersection of King Street, Queen Street, The Queensway, and Roncesvalles Avenue (KQQR) this year. The project will include replacing streetcar track, overhead infrastructure/poles, lighting, watermain and sewers, and also extend the dedicated streetcar right-of-way from Claude Avenue east to KQQR, enhance streetcar stops and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The overall joint project is expected to be completed by summer 2022.

As of January 3, in preparation for this project, buses have replaced 501 Queen streetcars between Long Branch Loop and Jarvis Street, and 504 King streetcars between Dundas West Station and Shaw Street. Additional service changes/diversions will be necessary in the KQQR area beginning in late March.

Work details

Starting February 12, 2021

Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • KQQR Intersection
  • King Street West, from KQQR intersection to approximately 80 meters southeast
  • The Queensway, from Parkside Drive to KQQR intersection
  • Queen Street West, from KQQR intersection to west of Triller Avenue
 Watermain replacement

Work crews will:

  • Excavate the road and install the new watermain
  • Replace any City-owned water service pipes from the watermain to the private property line
Sewer relining

Work crews will:

  • Clean the interior of existing sanitary and storm sewers, install a liner inside existing sewers to seal cracks and/or joints.
  • Repair maintenance holes and upgrade City-owned portion of sewer connections (where necessary).
  • Sidewalks will remain open at all times
  • One lane of traffic in each direction approaching the KQQR intersection and along The Queensway will be maintained for vehicles and cyclists
  • Unauthorized parking is not allowed in active work zone.
February 15, 2021 to early April 2021

Monday to Friday, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. (additional hours as needed)

  • The Queensway, from Parkside Drive to KQQR intersection
  • Queen Street West, from KQQR intersection to west of Triller Avenue
  • King Street West, from KQQR intersection to west of Triller Avenue.
  • Roncesvalles Avenue, from KQQR intersection to just south of the TTC Yard entrance

In advance of streetcar track construction, TTC overhead crews will be removing the streetcar overhead infrastructure.There will be no effect to the community hydro power during this work.
  • Traffic and bus transit service will be maintained with some lane restrictions.
  • The location of the moving work zone may prevent left turns at the KQQR intersection.
  • Existing on-street parking where permitted will be maintained as best as possible.
